Family Books

I have a few books written by others that has formed a large part of my family research. I’ve posted some of them below.

The Eggen Family History

In 2001, Anna Beth Wynne and Velma White compiled a brief history of Thore Anstensen Eggen, his ancestors, and descendants. This book traces parts of my Melby branch of the family. I took the original word files I had and compiled them into an Adobe PDF file.

The Colwick Family Book

Velma White compiled this brief look at the Colwick family (Kolvig in Norway). I’m not sure when she put this together.  I scanned it an have posted it as an Adobe PDF file.

Our Ostebee Family

This is the family research compiled by Joyce Ostebee. It is a branch off of the Melby side focusing on Tarald Mikkelson from Norway and goes as far back as the year 1600 in parts. The Ostebee family and their cousins (to include some of the Melbys) come from Sand Parish, Rogaland County in Norway.  It is a pretty large volume, so I had to break it into several pieces in order to post on the internet.

  1. Cover
  2. Section 1 – Ancestors
  3. Section 2 – Tarald & Margrete
  4. Section 3 – Mikkel & Cecilia
  5. Section 4 – Ben
  6. Section 5 – Anna Nybru
  7. Section 6 – Halvard
  8. Section 7 – Sam
  9. Section 8 – Johan
  10. Section 9 – Lars
  11. Section 10 – Mandius
  12. Section 11 – Sarah & Ingebret
  13. Section 12 – Martha Meling

An O’Hearn Family History: Pioneers and Patriots

Compiled in 2000 by Suzanne O”Hearn Mills, this is a brief collection of her research into the O’Hearns who immigrated from the County of Limerick in Ireland.

Our Ancestors from The Potomac to the Lavaca: Brown-Riney and Allied Families

The one book I have from my father’s side of the family (the Stewart branch). Also known as “The Big Brown Book” because its big and, well it’s cover is brown. It was printed in 1996 and compiled by Wallace B. New. This thing is huge, I’ve barely scratched the surface of this volume.

Most of the O’Hearn family info that I have came from a book called “An O’Hearn Family History: Pioneers and Patriots” by Suzanne O’Hearn Mills. Unfortunately, Suzanne and her husband have both passed, and I do not know who would be the best person to contact to obtain a copy of this book. The book’s publisher is Anundsen Publishing Company, Decorah, Iowa 52101. I don’t know if they would have a copy or not.

All of my personal family tree research is up on the Ancestry.com website. I hope that proves useful.

      Good Luck,
      Bob Lee

  3. I recall my mother having a book from the Catholic Church in Iowa which had portraits of the church members, Mary Phelan and other O’Hearn families were part of the book.

If it isn’t too much trouble, I would greatly appreciate it if you could send me copies of these pictures. Or perhaps the point of contact at the church so I could ask for a copy.

      Thanks,
      Bob Lee

  4. My question is in regards to the book Our Ancestors From the Potomac to the LaVaca… Years ago my mother had the opportunity to purchase this book, but didn’t. Is it possibe for me to purchase this book now?

    Thank You,
    Tommy

    1. @Tommy,
The copy of the ‘Big Brown Book’ that I have was given to me by my grandmother. I don’t know where or if you can get a new copy. On the title page of the book, the publisher is the Alpha Publishing Group in Houston, Texas. No address is given. The copyright year is 1996 and held by Wallace B. New. I don’t know if you’ll be able to get a copy of it from them or not.

      Good luck.
      Bob Lee
